Makkah – The Holiest City For Muslims

Makkah or (Mecca) – The capital of Saudi Arabia, In 2008 its resident population was 1.7 million, even though the visitors here are more than double this number every year specially during the time of Hajj.

Mecca is the the birthplace of Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) and a site of the composition of the holy book for the Muslims (Quran). Makkah is regarded to be the holiest city in Islam. A pilgrimage to it known as the Hajj is compulsory upon all able Muslims. Over 13 million Muslims visit Mecca annually. Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) was born in Mecca in 570, and therefore Islam has been linked with the city ever since. Makkah has the Masjid al-Haram which is the largest mosque in the world. Kaaba is surrounded by this mosque, which Muslims turn towards while offering daily prayer. This mosque is also commonly famous and known as the Haram or Grand Mosque. The Economy of the Mecca is heavily dependent upon the pilgrims which came every year annually. Pilgrims are provided with free health care by Saudi Government. Arabic is the official language here and spoken commonly.
