Underwater Ithaa Restaurant – located at the Conard Maldives Rangali Island in Rangalifinolhu, Maldives. Ithaa, meaning mother of pearl in Dhivehi, is a mostly unique underwater restaurant held five meters below sea level. The five-by-nine meter restaurant has a ability to accommodate 14 people and is encased in R-Cast acrylic which is a transparent acrylic roof offering a 180° panoramic view. The restaurant was designed and built by M.J. Murphy Ltd. – a design consultancy based in New Zealand – and was opened on April 15, 2005. Food served in the restaurant has evolved over the years and is now best described as modern European with Asian inspirations.
In April 2010, to celebrate the restaurant’s 5th anniversary, it was than made possible to sleep in Ithaa for the night if the restaurant if was not booked for dinner. Ithaa‘s entry is a twisting staircase in a thatched pavilion at the end of a breakwater. The tsunami which followed the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake topped out at 0.31m below the staircase entrance, and caused no damage to the restaurant. The restaurant is also used for private parties and weddings.
