Nauru – officially known as the Republic of Nauru and previously known as Pleasant Island. IT is an island country in Micronesia in the South Pacific. Nauru is the world’s smallest republic, cover just 21 square kilometers (8.1 sq. mi). With only 9,378 residents, it is the second least-populated country after Vatican City which is least populated country. It was named Pleasant Island by its first European visitors in appreciation of its lush vegetation and friendly locals; Nauru has since become a prominent example of resource mismanagement. In just 50 years, a group of British and Australian mining companies has demolished 80% of the island’s 21-sq-km land mass, an area known as ‘topside.’
