Kiev Pechersk Lavra – The Religious center of Ukraine. It was built almost a thousand years ago when there was Kievan Rus, and was ruled by princes and nobles. It is difficult to imagine how long it was. It is difficult to understand how all this has survived to the present day. Delightful frescos, the golden domes and white walls decorated with Kiev and attract tourists from all over the world. This monastery played very significant role in Ukrainian culture development. Kiev-Pechersk Lavra Cave became the biggest monastery on the territory of former Kievan Rus, its total area was almost 30 hectares.
The name of the monastery originates exactly from the caves (the word “Pechera” in Ukrainian language means a “Cave“), the word “Lavra” means Rank, it received large and influential monasteries, which size was like small towns with streets (lavra means “street” in Greek language).
