Playa Flamenco (Flamenco Beach) is a beautiful beach and almost waveless, sheltered cove. It is long, wide, bordered by greenery and only one or two buildings are near it. The Fish swim right up to the edge of the water, and has at least 20 yards of crystal clear visibility underwater. The beach is visited by African Seagulls, and sometimes by dolphins. Its white sandy beach stretches all along the entire bay, you will feel the Caribbean sun all over the place and wonder why you had waited this long. Fishing is prohibited in the area, but you can take pictures, and there’s lots to see snorkeling around four dispersed reefs on one end of the beach. A recommended dive starts on the right side of the beach, which runs along the cliff to the east of the bay, sea swimming in and out doubling to around islets. At night, if there is no moon, you can in fact see the Milky Way widen out across the sky. The beach has been partly developed: there are park rangers, showers, bathrooms and one or two kiosks where you can get a beverage or some ice and a bit of food during the day. You can find many small hotels to stay. You may get there by plane (in a small plane from a small airport at Fajardo, on the main island) or you can visit by ferry (get there 1hr early, at least, and it can get crowded, but its also fun once you get in).
Flamenco Beach is considered the 2nd most beautiful beach in the world by Discover Channel and by far the most popular beach in Culebra. Locals call the “Gaviero of Silence“, possibly for the colony of gulls nesting on the cliff that closes angled east. I would like to say that Flamenco is a wonderful place to snorkle, sunbathe, swim, socialize and camp out. Enjoy, camping gear, and many places to barbeque. Or you can just bring a book and some sunblock.
