Castles have always been a mark of glory in any time. A lot can be known by looking at the architecture and design of a castle i.e. its history and the people of that particular time zone. The Turaida Castle located in the Gauja valley of Lativia has been standing there from past 8 centuries. Turaida Castle is standing on approximately 80 meter high strip of land between two ravines at Guaja River.
The construction of this Turauda Castle took three centuries starting from 13th century and ending in 16th century. The medieval period was the time of Albert, Archbishop of Riga who started its construction for multiple purposes. The castle when first built was named Fredeland (Land of peace). Local people then replaced its name Fredeland by Turaida, which has survived till now.
The huge building with neatly aliened walls took the glory to another level. The sky reaching tower surrounded by clouds seems to be floating. The sight is worth watching and fairy-tale like. The overall structure of the Turaida Castle is like a huge ship standing in the trees. The huge and magnificent tower and walls of castle are made of perfectly aligned bricks. The temperature maintenance system in this castle is composed of hollow walls. The air trapped in these walls keep the rooms warm by rising up through punched holes and thus the castle is cozy and warm in freezing winters.
Almost every castle is designed with a mystical approach. This castle also owns a mystery with hidden ways and underground places where the jewelry/treasure was kept and later on was discovered by the archaeologists. Along with the hidden treasures some weapons and commonly used kitchen utensils were also discovered. They also found scattering coins of different metals including copper and one gold ducat as well.
The tourists from around the world visit this castle of the historical value. The winding narrow staircase leads to the top. The scenic views of forested Guaja valley are breathtaking as sight goes a long way from 27 meters high tower. For history lovers and Europe travelers this is a must see site.
