Kansai International Airport is said to be so gargantuan that it can be seen from space. Kansai International Airport is one of the most challenging projects for the human mind as the location was unusual and diverges from the ideal requirements e.g. spacious flat ground, favourable wind and great visibility. On the other hand the engineers had to take into account the unstable seabed, floods, sinking, cyclones, earthquakes and other challenges regarding safety and stability.
Although, In Japan land is scarce but as it is said that the “Necessity is the mother of all inventions”, Japanese solved the problem with the help of an Italian architect Renzo Piano, of building an Airport in Osaka by utilizing a land (artificial island) 2.5 miles long and 1.6 miles wide at a distance of 3 miles off the shore. The Colossal structure of Kansai International Airport started in the year 1987 and by 1994 (opening year) the airport was functioning with jumbo jets landing on the runway. The Kansai International Airport was restructured and second runway of 4,000 m × 60 m (13,123 ft × 197 ft) was opened on 2 August 2007.
It was predicted that the island would sink 5.7 m (19 ft) at the time of the plan formulation due to the use of construction material. After construction it sank by 8.2 m (27 ft) the construction of Airport became more of a challenge and was overcome by strategically improved designs i.e. by adding columns and by 2003 the sinking problem was overcome. The Kansai International Airport had a total investment of 15 billion (US) dollars and an optimized planning of 20 years leading to three years of construction.
The Airport has three terminals. The Terminal with arrivals on the first floor and departures on the 4th floor is unique in its design. The Terminal 1 is said to be the longest building of the world with an area of 1.7 kilometres. The airport is a good priority for International flights still domestic flights are also available. The experience for the travellers is unique and different. Several facilities are available making it a small operating town. The airport has 47 restaurants in Passenger terminal, two convenient huge stores, duty free shops and several other spots. Hotel Nikko Kansai Airport is directly attached to the airport and is utilized by travellers and is the only hotel in the island itself.
The travelling through the Kansai International Airport becomes a mind blowing experience for every traveller. The uniqueness is felt the moment plane hits the ground. The ocean and the feeling to be on the island make it an exhilarating experience for the passenger. Rest the traveller is ready to go to the desired destination or explore the wonders of Kansai.
