King Fahd International Airport is the largest airport in terms of the land it covers as mentioned in Guinness Book of World Record. Airports have always been a mega project for all the countries as they are the connecting chords of International relations. The Saudi Government has invested on a land mass of 780 square miles which makes it 11 square miles larger than the neighbouring country Bahrain. The airport is located in between Qatif and Dammam.
The King Fahd International Airport was designed with the help of architecture firm Yamasaki & Associates and Boeing Aero systems International in 1976 and 1977. The construction started in 1983 making it completely functional by November 1999. The Airport is a six story terminal. The three stories are used for passenger processing with arrivals on third, departures on sixth and boarding on fourth floor. The service levels are the mezzanine service level and the mezzanine level (uppermost level). There are 11 boarding bridges connected with 15 gates. The original capacity is of 31 gates. The airport has two run ways with a length of 4,000 m. In the 14 year span of the airport the statistics for air movements are round about 66,000.
King Fahd international Airport has many unique features but the most standing feature is the presence of a huge mosque with a capacity of more than 2000 people. The craft, the art used is unique and beautiful. The total area covered by the mosque is 46,200 m².
Another unique feature of King Fahd international Airport is presence of a 16,400 m2 Royal Terminal. There are four bridges, exclusively decorated lounge and press conference room. The terminal is rarely used, as is only specific for high government officials and royal family.
The King Fahd international Airport t is provided with numerous duty free stores, restaurants, currency exchange, multi-storeyed parking lot, smoking room, hotel and travel agencies. The shops and duty free stores are made by a plan called “Golden Circle”. This Airport was the first to have duty free shops in Saudi Kingdom. The flight experience is pleasant and customer service counters 66 for national airlines and 44 for foreign airlines are available.
