Italy is a country of diverse history that is reflected through the buildings and monuments, standing high in every corner of its city. Leaning Tower of Pisa (Italian: Torre pendente di Pisa) also known as Tower of Pisa (Torre di Pisa) is one of the examples from the history and yet standing in Province of Pisa from centuries. The bell tower is located behind the Cathedral in Pisa’s Cathedral Square (Piazza del Duomo). The leaning tower of Pisa is considered to be the third old building after Cathedral and the Baptistery. The Tower of Pisa has gone through different regimes from 1173 till now.
This historic Tower of Pisa was built in 200 years. The construction took long mainly because of the fought battles of Republic of Pisa with Genoa, Lucca, and Florence. The lower side of leaning Tower of Pisa has a height of 55.86 metres (183.27 feet) while the high side has a height of 56.67 metres (185.93 feet). The Tower of Pisa is famous for the natural tilt or lean. This Tower of Pisa with a weight of 14,500 metric tons is tilted to an angel of 3.99 degrees.
It is said that during the construction of Tower of Pisa the architects and builders neglected the fact that the foundation is being laid on the unstable subsoil. Very soon after the construction of first two floors the Tower of Pisa leaned toward one side. The soft ground could not support the weight of the tower. The halt in construction favoured the hardening of land otherwise the tower could have collapsed. The Tower of Pisa was constantly leaning till 1990, when the government took the notice and started working on the stabilization and corrective reconstruction of tower. In 2001 and 2008 the surface was levelled from the high end by taking out 38 cubic meters and 70 metric tons of soil respectively. The tilt was decreased from 5.5 to 3.99 degrees and the Tower of Pisa was declared as stable for next 300 years.
The Tower of Pisa is famous for not only being a master piece of architects of different times or being the centre for Catholics but also for the well-known science experiment of Galileo Galilei. It is said that Galileo Galilei performed the experiment for free falling bodies from the top of Tower of Pisa. He gave the famous theory by using two cannonballs and proposed that bodies fall independent of their weight. Another famous story related with the tower is that during world war two the Allies though it to be an observatory point of Germans. The army sergeant sent to check the presence of Germans was totally amused by the beauty of the tower and later refrained, the Allies from demolishing the historic building.
