The Museum of Bags and Purses was started by Hendrikje Ivo and her husband in two rooms of a villa located in Amstelveen. Hendrikje Ivo was interested in collecting purses. It all started when she bought a tortoise shell bag which was dated 1820. She started collecting bags and later on decided to exhibit them.
In June 2007, the Museum of Bags and Purses was shifted to the seventeenth century patrician house which is located along the canal Herengracht. The museum has attracted many visitors since its opening. An interesting fact about the Museum of Bags and Purses is that it is mostly visited by women.
You can find bags from different eras. Most of the handbags from the earlier times are very small. At that time the sole purpose of the bag was to carry coins, keys or swing kits. Such bags were used by both men and women. You can also find branded bags in the museum. Most of them belong to the year 1950 and onwards. Another valuable possession of the museum includes a goat skin belt pouch for men from sixteenth century.
