The Yaeyama Islands – are a group of islands located in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. The peaceful Yaeyama Islands are stuck at the very southern tip of the Japanese archipelago. It looks more like the Caribbean; the islands of Iriomote, Taketomi and Ishigaki serve up generous portions of sun, sea, sand and sushi. Ishigaki has the best of the seashores, while Taketomi is well-known for its old-fashioned Ryukyuan houses and Iriomote is a jungle play area with an open-air onsen (hot springs).
Mushaama Festival is the famous festival here celebrated on 14 July. On Hateruma Island, this ingathering festival is celebrated during Obon. It features a parade of the local richness god Miruku and his children, shishi (lion) dances, and staff dances. The Yonaguni language is the native language of the island of Yonaguni.
